A Tender Heart

I needed some gentle hands to hold my fragile heart

and your eyes spoke words without mouths or lips

they screamed out trust with lungs they didn’t have

and so I dug my beating heart out of the cage in my chest and handed it over

It left a gaping hole in my body

but i was glad to feel something other than the thump thump my heart used to make

and without my tender heart to worry about I started to be okay

I thought I was doing myself a favour by taking it out of the most desolate place I knew

myself

I never thought it could get much worse

but then I put my flesh in your hands

It was bloody to begin with but you squeezed the rest out until there was nothing

and then left it lying on a park bench

I guess a tender heart doesn’t have a safe place
